The appointment

Standing for the State, before the High Court

In April 2007, Amandeep Singh Rai was appointed Deputy Advocate General (DAG) for the State of Punjab — a law officer's post responsible for representing the State government in litigation before the Punjab and Haryana High Court at Chandigarh.

The role placed him on the other side of the bar from private practice: defending the State's actions and policies in writ petitions, service disputes, and other matters brought against the government, and appearing for Punjab in matters the High Court called upon the State to answer. He held the post until October 2012, a tenure of five and a half years.

Amandeep Singh Rai's tenure as Deputy Advocate General followed his father's own years in the State's legal service. S. Paramjit Singh Rai served the State of Punjab as Director of Prosecution and Litigation from 1997 to 2008, overseeing the State's prosecution and litigation functions for over a decade — a period that overlapped directly with his son's own appointment as Deputy Advocate General in 2007.
